The reason for data recovery is usually due to physical damage to the storage or file system that prevents it from being mounted by the host operating system.
One way to recover data is through the operating system failure which is done usually on a single-disk, single-partition, single- OS system and the goal is to copy all of the files you want onto another disk. A “live CD” can accomplish this task and provides a means to mount the system drive and backup disks to move the files from the system disk onto a backup with a file manager or optical disc authorizing software. This can be mitigated by disk partitioning and consistently storing valuable data files on a different partition from the replaceable OS system files.
There is also disk-level failure, such as a compromised file system or hard disk failure. If this is the case data can be confusing to read. Depending on the case, you can repair the file system, partition table or hard disk recovery with techniques ranging from a software-based recovery of corrupted data to hardware replacement on a physcally damaged disk. You want to salvage whatever data can be read with a one-time recovery.
Usually deleted files are not erased immediately but references to them in the directory structure are removed and you can overwrite in the space they occupied. Usually the original file can be restored.
